Applications of the Shore C hardness tester

To determine Shore hardness, scale C, of medium hardness rubber test pieces and articles, in accordance with ASTM D-2240. It is used for the following materials: medium hardness rubbers and plastics, plaster and gypsum, among others.

What is Shore C hardness?

Shore hardness is a measurement system used to determine the resistance of certain materials, particularly those of medium hardness such as plastics and elastomers. Shore C hardness is expressed on a scale from 0 to 100 – the lower the value, the softer the material, and the higher the value, the harder and more rigid it is.
Each of our Shore C hardness testers comes in a wooden case and includes a 60 Shore verification gauge as standard.
Hardness testers must be calibrated absolutely, not by referencing. Calibration involves measuring, amongst other parameters, the force exerted by the indenter throughout its full travel and the exact geometry of the indenter tip. The values obtained must fall within the tolerances defined by the relevant standards (ISO 868 and DIN 53505 for Europe, ASTM D 2240 for the USA).

Baxlo supplies every hardness tester with a full calibration certificate and can carry out recalibration quickly and cost-effectively. Calibration by referencing (using rubber test blocks of known and certified hardness) may be sufficient for some applications where high precision is not required. However, it is not recommended and is not recognised by the standards, so it will not be suitable where a calibration programme compliant with ISO 9000 quality systems is required.

Place the hardness tester on a firm, flat surface at all times. Apply even pressure on the indenter until it penetrates the material being tested. Wait approximately 3 seconds before reading the result on the Shore scale. The material must be at least 6 mm thick for a valid measurement, and it is recommended to take 5 readings at different points.
