A Shore D durometer is an instrument that measures the hardness of materials such as rigid plastics, thermoset polymers, resins, and some hard rubbers. It is used to determine the hardness and resistance of certain materials, perform quality control on some industrial products, and carry out testing on them. These types of tests are common in industries such as automotive, electronics, and construction, among others.
It is a standardized measurement technique used to calculate the resistance or hardness of certain materials such as plastic and rubber.
This method was created by Albert Ferdinand Shore. It consists of an indenter that presses with a controlled force on the material’s surface.
The depth of penetration when applying the indenter provides a value from 0 to 100, where the lower the number, the soter and more flexible the material; the higher the number, the greater the hardness and rigidity.
Before starting the test, it is important to place the durometer on a rigid and flat surface at all times. To use the Shore D durometer, press evenly on the indenter so that it penetrates the material to be measured.
Once this is done, wait about 15 seconds to read the result on the Shore scale. Some recommendations to keep in mind: the material thickness should be at least 6 mm, and 5 measurements should be taken at different points of the sample.
